What is Reiki (pronounced "ray-key"). Though its description and history can be found so readily online today, I would like to share my own description, as I have been told it helps people to more clearly understand it purpose and gives more of an in-depth look into what people can expect with each session given.
In essence, we all have the innate ability to heal ourselves (this is very important to remember). And with this, we are all made of the same energy; thus, the energy of Reiki works with our body's energy to help relax, focus, and prepare our body for healing. When we fall ill or experience a disease (dis-ease) it is simply a result or symptom for the underlying cause.
The underlying cause of such illness or dis-ease can be vast and varying in degrees, yet is oftentimes caused by various forms/stages of trauma, suppressed feelings, the inabilities to be ourselves to fit in with our families/cultures/religions/societies, lack of self-love and acceptance, etc. Whenever we deny a part of ourselves, suppress our thoughts, feelings, or painful past experiences... that built up negative energy needs to find its outlet sooner or later and be dealt with. Depending on the extremities of the illness/dis-ease often reflects the extremities of the underlying cause(s) not being dealt with.
There are some Practitioners/Masters who tend to follow Dr. Hayashi’s “structured” science-based practices; meaning that there is little hand movement and focuses on certain areas of the body, primarily the 7 Chakras (The 7 known energy centers within each living body) and seek to clear anything that blocks flow within these energetic portals. Yet there are many others, like myself in this field, who often find it gets “innately” mixed with various other forms of energy healings, such as Shamanic/Native Indian Healing, Angelic Healing, Hawaiian/Huna Healing, Prana Healing, or Quantum Touch Healing...etc. Meaning... when those who perform Reiki on clients, it is all automated. Practitioners and Masters of Reiki act as channels/conduits for which the Universal/Etheric Energies flow through us (primarily our hands) unto to the client by a gentle "laying on of the hands”. Meaning, Reiki Practitioners/Masters place their hands on or slightly above a client. This energy is what creates the healing effects we receive.
Here on earth, we have many doctors/practitioners of medicine, some of which are specialized in their field or focus. Meaning we have Podiatrists, Cardiologists, Pulmonologist, Oncologists, OBGYN's, Psychologists, Dentists, etc. With each doctor/practitioner you visit, they will have varied degrees or skills in such areas of expertise. No one particular doctor will follow the exact same protocol or procedure in treatments. Therefore, you have a choice as to which feels most comfortable to you in preference of treatment.
The very same principle is applied here when working with universal energies. For such energies have their own form of “specialists” who apply their unique methods of healing to a client. Depending on what the particular client may need, a client may end up experiencing varied degrees and procedures in which healings occur upon each visit... whether in visitation of numerous Practitioners/Masters in this field or upon visitation of the same Practitioner/Master each time.
Some Reiki Practitioners/Masters may also feel compelled to work with crystal therapy, color therapy, Aromatherapy, Acupuncture, Qi Gong, or Reflexology (to name a few). There is no right or wrong method of healing and with each modality used can only help increase the successful chances of healing.
The key we all need to remember is the treatment is only as successful as the client intends. Meaning, the practitioners can help aid in bringing relief of pain, tensions, stresses and anxieties felt by the client. The practitioners may even, through the works of the universal energies, assist in “healing” the client’s symptoms. Yet for a cure to become eminent, the client needs to be willing to embrace a lifestyle of complete healing, requiring the client to do any work on their own which may be necessary to aid in the healing process. This may include, but not limited to, releasing old patterns/behaviors, thought processes, and overcome the blockages/extremities one has faced in their life… in addition to making the necessary lifestyle changes of eating properly, exercising regularly, getting proper rest, etc. When the client is willing to embrace such changes necessary and not simply follow through only during times of convenience, the desired results for a cure to becomes truly eminent. Your practitioner may offer several suggestions or tools in which to incorporate in the client’s life, yet it is the responsibility of the client to uphold and maintain such practices.
